Activism is in the midst of a transition toward ESG, but this may only be temporary, said Drew Chapman, head of Cole Schotz’s new shareholder activism practice, in an interview with Insightia.

“There has clearly been a move towards ESG activism this year and given the current market turmoil it will be interesting to see how this trend develops,” said Chapman, who joined Cole Schotz earlier this month.

Despite the rapid adoption of ESG in activism, Chapman thinks the era of financial-oriented activism is far from over.

“We are seeing some campaigns and engagements where activists are focusing on the financial, back to the activism of old,” Chapman added.

As for his new role as head of Cole Schotz’s new shareholder activism practice, Chapman expressed excitement at “being more engaged on thought leadership and issues in the shareholder activism industry.”
